Welcome to Rio de Janeiro
On behalf of the Organizing Committee of the 2nd Latin American Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine Congress it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Rio de Janeiro for the second edition of this series of meetings, conceived to provide a forum to discuss the impact of pharmacogenomics in personalized healthcare in Latin America. There are nearly 600 million people of Latin American heritage, living in 24 countries, speaking two major languages (Portuguese and Spanish) and sharing ancestral roots in America, Europe and Africa. Pharmacogenomics studies and applications in Latin American populations must take into account not only their ethnic and cultural diversity, but also socio-economical, scientific and technological disparities. Our meeting covers these aspects, but also takes on a more global approach on the growing contribution of genomic information and biotechnological tools to the way medicines are prescribed to patients, and, as a consequence, how they are developed in industry. The conference program comprises three keynote lectures by international experts, five scientific/technological symposia, two sessions of debates on the implementation of pharmacogenomics in clinical practice and a poster session, to which we encourage the submission of high quality abstracts. There will be ample opportunity for interaction among senior and junior investigators, postdoctoral and postgraduate researchers, medical, regulatory and industry experts in a range of disciplines linked to pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine.
Once again: Welcome to Rio de Janeiro, Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvelous City, Rio´s nickname).
